Storytelling: your company has a story, stop hiding it
The word storytelling has been so battered that it now conjures seminar slides and nicely dressed lies. A shame, because the thing itself, telling a true story rather than lining up facts, is still the most powerful mechanism in all of communication. Let’s put it back on its feet.
Why the brain prefers stories
A list of arguments gets evaluated, a story gets lived. When you say “we’re reactive”, the client files it away with the thousand other promises of the day. When you tell them about the Saturday night you reopened the workshop to save a client before their Monday trade show, they remember it six months later and repeat it to others. Same information, a different vehicle, and a level of recall that doesn’t compare.
Your story already exists
Company storytelling isn’t invented, it’s excavated. Why did the founder start? What was the worst moment, and what held? Which client changed the way you work? What decision did you make against everyone’s advice? In those four questions there’s always a real brand story sleeping. Ours fits in one line on our about page: a Swiss Army knife who chose to live a hundred lives by building other people’s. Our whole positioning flows from it.
Where to tell it so it pays off
The About page first, the second most visited page on most sites and yet the most neglected. Your sales pitch next: one true anecdote at the right moment closes more deals than any feature list. Social media last, where the story breaks into episodes: the backstage, the failures, the decisions. That’s exactly the content the algorithms reward, because it’s what humans watch to the end.
The one non-negotiable rule: it all has to be true. Audiences have a fearsomely accurate detector for embellishment, and an inflated story that gets caught costs more than no story at all. If you think you have nothing to tell, bring us a coffee and forty minutes. We’ve never met a company without a story, only companies that had never asked themselves the right questions.
